UPDATE: UNCUT VIDEO BELOW...
anyone else catch this police pursuit on live TV earlier tonight? silver Corvette C6 chased by Los Angeles police at high speeds, ending in downtown Los Angeles after the Corvette plows into another car.
crash:

http://www.deadline.com/2013/12/police…
http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/video/9634793-…
i didn't catch it live. instead, when i got home at 1 am i turned on the tv to find an encore broadcast of the 10 pm news covering the live chase. unfortunately, they ended the broadcast early at 10:30 for a sports special. so i went online to see how it ended, and apparently... Corvette guy got shot by cops on live TV.
UPDATE : after reading several people's tweets, take a look at the crash video and see who had the green light. yup, fleeing Corvette had the green, "innocent" car ran a red light... right into a police chase.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
embed/simple
the Corvette was heading "up" in relation to the screen direction towards the green light when the other car enters intersection from the "left"
UPDATE 2 - watch the unedited video at your own risk
:
Crash happens around 20:30, shooting shortly after.

Fair enough! ;)
On that topic, though, I just found it weird to hear the TV folks speculate on whether sharp or non-lethal rounds had been used. Being the pessimist that I am, I assume that someone was shot and killed in an encounter that's described as "violent" or "... chase ends with suspect being shot by Police".
... or do they just say that to talk down the possible killing of a man on live TV?

At first I thought this was going to be about a pit maneuver gone wrong, or a driver who lost control at high speed and slammed into a wall.
Nope. It was an idiot fugitive who didn't check for oncoming cars while pulling out, and an unobservant (though 'not at a fault') driver who couldn't avoid the oncoming corvette.
It makes me wonder if the driver of the black car was paying much attention, the Corvette was crawling into the intersection. There were no other cars on the road, no other obstacles, and nothing blocking the line of sight. If the driver of the black car could execute a lane change, he could move aside plenty far enough to avoid the Corvette if he had seen it as it was pulling out. I don't think the black car could have been going over 40mph there. Again, this isn't the black car's fault, but he could have just as easily have prevented it as the Corvette could have.

none taken, i agree with you. that 'shoot first, ask questions later' attitude used to exist mostly in the movies, but lately it does seem to be more and more actual policy in law enforcement.
hell, with so much technology available in the world, why did this become a "high speed chase" in the first place? i was watching the first half live (i didn't see the crash or subsequent shooting) and police had backed off, letting the helicopter follow the erratic driver. he was mostly just driving around, in the same general area, not really driving too dangerous. then at some point they decided to get right back on his ass with several patrol cars and that's when the Corvette started really driving fast. a short while later and the crash/shooting happened.

They probably don't know at this time and are just talking out of their ass, but are using buzzwords like 'violent' and 'dangerous' and the speculation about the guy's condition and how/if he died to get people to watch the 6a.m. news. In all likelihood sharp rounds were used since the dude fled on foot, the LAPD probably didn't have time to retrieve the bean bag shotguns out of their trunks and just used their pistols, but for now the speculation will attract audiences.

I'm not a hundred percent sure how this would have been handled elsewhere, but at least in my mind there's a point where you let a clearly erratic driver run just to avoid crashes/victims/shootings/stress. Pressuring someone on the run will certainly end it at some point, but it's almost always going to come at a price. Sure, he was in the wrong to run from the law ... but I'll never understand how that somehow justifies behavior like this.
What would have been so bad about just watching were he went? I don't think he was right on his way to commit another act of crime, whatever it was he did before.

I simply assumed the Corvette driver didn't see the incoming car because he was checking his mirrors and/or his right side. Sure, it's always nice to know you're good to go, but he did have the greens.

after watching the video, it seems quite apparent to me that the driver did not pose a threat to police and did not merit police to open fire on him. he appeared to get out of the crashed Corvette and clumsily try to run - he didn't get a few feet before he collapsed clutching his abdomen.

This makes me so angry. A life, just wasted...gone. If the guy was trying to get away simply because of a DUI, its double sad.
I make no excuses for people that drink and drive, but come on...why did the police officers have to KILL a person, that was clearly injured, unarmed and trying to move away from his car? There were a ton of police officers around, they could have chosen to use a) taser b) tackle the guy or other means necessary to stop him from walking, but they shoot him? Poor guy didnt even run the red light...

Not guaranteed that it had active OnStar. My mom had an 2004 Pontiac with analog OnStar but when they made the digital switch, she would have had to pay to upgrade to a digital receiver so she just cancelled her subscription. May have been a similar case here. Also, I believe there is a safeguard with OnStar-equipped vehicles where the request to activate the subscription must be initiated from the car itself. I don't think OnStar can just activate it completely remotely by themselves unless it is an active subscription.

I am no-doubt all for individual's gun rights but we seem to have adopted a shoot first, shoot them again, what just happened attitude towards this kind of thing; cops do it, individuals do it, hell our past two presidents have done it! We have become a country where killing a problem is easier then solving it, taking a life is easier for someone than analyzing a situation.

This. We typically include time/weather/traffic conditions/speed in whether or not we initiate or continue a pursuit, weighed against the seriousness of the offense. It's risk to the public safety of the pursuit vs. that of the criminal on the loose.
Interestingly enough, we're authorized to "shoot fleeing felons" by the letter of the law - an "Old West" holdover. We need to have a CLEAR indication that this person is directly en route to do some other violent crime before we can open fire based on flight alone. A lot will depend on the information the officers had preceding the pursuit; what was this guy wanted for?
It's good video that likely shows a bad shoot, or at least a very questionable one. But I wasn't in the boots on the ground. It's got me scratching my head, though. In addition to our rifles, we carry beanbag rounds in shotguns. A head shot with one of those can be fatal, though. I'm curious how this'll all get sorted out.

Shit happens, assholes get in car chases. From first look it does look like there were a few bean bags shot at the guy. Regardless of the shooting, that was a huge accident and there is very little chance the vette driver was uninjured in the accident. I dunno, I'd prefer the cops to shoot bean bags or simillar at an asshat that got in a chase and then gets out and tries to flea on foot. Lethal force really shouldn't have been on the books for this one but "non-lethal" rounds were completely called for to keep the asshat from trying to drag out a foot chase. No one can tell right now if it was an injury caused by the accident or if it was lethal force by the wonderful LAPD, I guess we will have to wait for a coroners report. But I can garantee that the media will have a field day with speculating about lethal force on this one.
I should also clarify that I am going to be the last one that is sympathetic towards police officers as well. After my own personal incidences with the officers I've dealt with I will never give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that officers need to be punished to the full extent of the law and recieve maximum penalties for any crime they commit. Aside from the babble, the cops I've dealt with are complete dicks that are bullies who try to provoke people so they can legally punish them. I'm not saying this is all officers but it has been the case with the majority of officers I have dealt with.
If the LAPD used lethal force in this case and there seemed to be no evidence of a firearm on the vette drivers person from the news copters view, the officers involved firing the lethal shots should not be allowed back to duty and should face criminal charges for their actions, but that is being wishful and the officers will get paid leave pending an investigation which will absolve them from wrong doing. . . Just look at what the Fullerton cops are trying to pull with the Kelly Thomas case.

I'll never understand why anyone would shoot a running suspect. Alright, I can see stopping them from escaping as a reason, but then you don't kill them but disable the person.
Weather seemed fine. Hell, there was of course traffic, but apart from his encounter with the (rather quick) car at the crossing, his speed wasn't even that terrible in itself. He did not strike me as a particularly routined driver from the heli's POV, but maybe visibility wasn't great for him or he was indeed under the influence of something. Either way, they should have just stopped him way earlier by different means.
How can you follow someone around for so long without coming up with a maneuver ŕ la nail strip or closing down the roads? Seemed to me like there was plenty of time and opportunity.

I watched the shooting about a dozen times. I see NOTHING that looks like a threat to the police. Just some drunk moron still trying to run. Tackle him, kick his ass a little (not justifiable either but I would let that slide, some people need a little sense knocked into them), call it a night. This looks like straight up manslaughter.
As for the "innocent" car, looks like one of those rare but karmatic instances of two drunks hitting each other. Dude straight up blew that red light and appeared to be speeding as well.

I wholly agree on your argument that emotional state and stress affect servants of the law, too, but I don't see how it played out in this particular scenario. He had already crashed (read: he was not going to hurt anyone by crashing the car now), he was at least slower than before now, and he was apparently unarmed at this point.
It freaks me out to think that you could end running from the cops out of desperation, maybe because you can't see yourself dealing with a prison sentence; if being stopped from running often plays out like this, who in their right mind would just jump out of the car all "Fair enough, folks, you got me"? :/

Gunfights are dynamic. The whole thing about "lethal force" is that we use it in defense of our own life, defense of others' lives, or to prevent serious bodily injury to ourselves or others. We don't need to wait for someone to squeeze off a round at us before they're a threat to us. So the quickest way to stop that threat is to shoot center mass. Aiming at arms, legs, etc. is simply not effective, and I'm a good shot.
I can paint a million pictures where that shooting would be justified; but the information released so far just doesn't include any of those factors.
Weather, time, traffic, etc. were all appropriate to continue the pursuit. I agree speed wasn't terrible where'd you'd terminate the chase. As for spike strips, guaranteed they were trying to get in front of the chase to deploy. Harder to do at every intersection with city block layouts. And we don't put parked cars in front of the pursuit to roadblock, that's movie magic shit.
Have Jeep, will travel.

I was watching this last night and knew when he got out and got dropped the LAPD/LACS smoked his ass. Being a local, they have a habit of doing this. Reasoning? They will come up with something. I do know that if you own a handgun, it comes up when your plate is run. I'm just curious if that idiot in the Nissan hadn't run the red light that this may have had a different outcome amd the vette driver would be sitting in a cell this morning. Regardless, when you run from the cops you basically just chuck your rights out the window. Anyone need a good running LS3?

Unfortunately I don't think anyone in this situation was really thinking rationally. Who in their right mind thinks it's a good idea to run in a (granted, very fast) car from the LAPD? Also no chase policies are pretty common these days in the US because of exactly this situation. The police department should really reconsider it's policies because putting officers with guns in this situation is irresponsible. If they weren't chasing him he likely wouldn't have crashed and they easily could have caught him at a later time.
I have family and friends who work in law enforcement so I can see it from their perspective, I imagine that whomever took the shot will definitely be reprimanded and their life will change because of this. At the same time I believe in personal responsibility and the dude running didn't exactly make smart decisions...

im going to say if the lapd wanted to pursue him, they should have done it quickly. but a hour chase on city streets is reckless on part of the lapd. they could of just followed him with a helicopter.

Agreed on the city block layouts ... I only threw that that in because I thought I had heard the newscasters mention he was basically driving in circles now at one point during the pursuit.
Regarding the roadblock ... well, let's say I had a "slow him down" kind of maneuver in mind, e.g. police cruisers join the cat-and-mouse game, drive in front of him and force him to slow down. I'm sure that's pretty hairy to pull of in a city area, though, I've just seen it in action in Germany and I was impressed with how well the whole ordeal ended; think along the lines of bringing down speed, then pitting the suspects car.

I see the LAPD are still using 5-6 year old Crown Vics... So much for new Interceptors...

So, if I may ask a stupid question since I've never been involved in any type of car accident, do your hazards just turn on or what this drunk idiot courteous enough to turn his on after impact?

Well, good thing he got crashed into by a running suspect, else the Nissan could have ended up as the one running.

I'm likely going to catch some flak for this, but I found him to be a very polite driver, seeing that he was already running from the police. I don't think he drove without a disregard for other people, he just did not want to be handcuffed, much less shot .... wait!

Here's a thought, and maybe someone in law enforcement or with some sort of traffic expertise can weight in on whether it's possible.
Why not just turn all the lights in a particular area red during a chase like this? For instance, choose a 10 block radius that the perp is traveling through and just turn all the lights red to at least keep some people safe. Obviously, the victim in this crash ran the red light, so it wouldn't have helped. But it would seem like it would keep innocents out of dangerous intersections and maybe make a run slightly more difficult if every intersection is clogged with cars.
Any idea what kind of car that was that got hit? That thing took a wallop and it would appear that the occupants were easily able to just walk away. At least let's hope that's the case.

Ah. And I didn't listen to the audio, so I didn't hear the driving in circles part. While I can't speak to LAPD's policy manual, mine says boxing isn't recommended.
Some years ago, we were practicing throwing the spike strips in our back parking lot; they're actually really neat devices. So one guy winds up to throw the unit and smacks the officer behind him square in the nose with his backswing, breaking his nose, blood everywhere. Which was alright with the rest of us, since nobody really liked that guy anyway.

Seems like this is becoming fairly common now, police officers are becoming more and more willing to kill people for very little reason. Would tazing him not have been just as effective? And honestly the guy had no weapons, what was he gonna do punch a police officer? Looks like the police department is just saying fuck the judge, fuck the jury, let's just be the executioners. I obviously don't support what the corvette driver did, but did he deserve to die?

If the most dangerous aspect of this entire thing was the suspect's driving then that threat ended with the crash. At that point what danger did he represent to anyone that could be justified by lethal force? Arrest and severe punishment without question, but unless he was a suspected murderer who represents a clear and immediate danger to the public or the officers on the scene there's no defense for shooting him. It can be argued that the pursuit further endangered others but if the suspect was inebriated stopping his vehicle would certainly be the right thing to do. We don't know anything about him yet.

Squirly rear end? Traction control off. Frenetic behavior? He went over intersections quickly with bumps and humps, what do you expect him to do, sit still? Driving with his lights off? He was trying to lose the cops, and when they started to chase him again he didn't think about putting them back on for a while. Also, he went through a green light on the intersection he crashed on. Technically it was the other driver's fault. Come on Sky5, get it right. Sucks that they shot him, it didn't look like he deserved it. If he was previously threatening the cops or something fine, but it didn't look like it.

Agreed...for being in a pursuit, he seemed "careful" when running red lights and did not necessarily really "endanger" anyone else, given that he was fleeing the police...what happened to the PIT maneuver, or using spike strips?

he went over spike strips earlier, they think they popped a few of his run flat tires.

The GIF seems to show that the Corvette had a green light and the the other car must have been running a red light. So did the other driver get a ticket?

they initially pursued him with local municipalities, then backed off for about half an hour, then came back with the troops. No idea why, I can never figure out their tactics.
